The National Gallery of Art, created with a major donation from Andrew Mellon, contains paintings and sculpture from the Mellon collection and other large private art collections. You'll find Jackson Pollack's famous drip painting Lavendar Mist here.

The Arthur M Sackler Gallery has permanent and changing exhibitions of Asian art. The Sackler is renowned for its Chinese bronzes and jades. The Sackler connects with the Freer Gallery of Art which houses 19th and 20th century American art, as well as Asian art.

The Corcoran Gallery is the largest nonfederal museum in Washington DC. Its popularity stems from its stellar list of artists represented like Renoir, de Kooning, Picasso, Calder, Whistler, and Sargent.
In addition to seeing art, any trip to the Mid-Atlantic and Washington DC should include a visit to the great memorials and monuments on the National Mall. The US Capitol and Lincoln Memorial are at either end of the Mall; in between them are the great memorials to Washington and Jefferson.
