Product Overview

Since the publication in 1945 of its first edition, A Wine-Grower's Guide has become the standard manual of wine-grape cultivation in America, dealing with viticulture not only in California but also in vastly different areas in other parts of the country. Written with the novice or amateur in mind, A Wine-Grower's Guide is not overburdened with a mass of technical details, and yet contains much material of interest to the commercial grape-grower; Mr. Wagner discusses the choice of suitable wine-grape varieties, the management of a vineyard, the rudiments of the ancient art of wine-growing, its past, present, and future in America. In this revised edition, Mr. Wagner has included knowledge gained over the past twenty years-in particular, on new fungicides and insecticides, modern plant nutrition, soil management, and tillage implements. Work with grapes and wine has for me been the ideal companion vocation to newspaper work, since the contrast is so complete. Success with these new grape varieties led to the establishment of a grapevine nursery and a little later on to a small winery, both of which are a joint enterprise of Mr. and Mrs. Wagner. Their red, white, rose, and Boordyblumchen wines, under the Boordy Vineyard label, are especially well known in Baltimore and Washington. The Wagners' work with the new hybrids was the start of a revolution in eastern wine-growing generally, with consequences only now beginning to be apparent. Mr. Wagner has contributed much to the magazines on both viticulture and public affairs and is the author of American Wines and Wine-Making (now in its fifth edition) and a co-author and editor of Turner on Wine (1941), an annotated edition of the first English-language book on wine, which appeared in the time of Queen Elizabeth I.
