Product Overview

This fine quality coffeetable book by Big Island author and art historian Dr. Don Aanavi is an in-depth study of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel's 1,600-piece collection of Asian and Oceanic art, beautifully photographed by David Frantzen. Originally published by Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and the East-West Center in 1990, The Art of Mauna Kea has won critical acclaim for its intelligent content and remarkable design by Barbara Pope of Honolulu. The second edition features its original formal blue silk sleeve and Foreward by Laurance S. Rockefeller who assembled the collection in 1965. Included are authentic Hawaiian quilts, tapa cloths, hand-carved tiki and other treasures from Polynesia, as well as ceremonial pieces from China, Japan, Southeast Asia and India, in keeping with the resort's East-meets-West tradition. The most notable piece is a 7th Century granite figure of the Buddha meditating beneath a bodhi tree. Size 9 1/2 x 12 with 180 pages, full color, heavy stock.
