This text for personnel seeking to qualify as Awareness- or Operational-Level responders to hazardous materials incidents is based on the National Fire Protection Association's Standard for Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents ; the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Title 29 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response ; and the Emergency Responder Guidelines (2002) of the Office for Domestic Preparedness. Introductory chapters discuss hazardous materials regulation, definitions, and statistics and hazardous materials properties and hazards. The next five chapters go through the incident problem-solving process with discussion of hazardous materials identification, incident management elements, strategic goals and tactic objectives, personal protective equipment, and contamination and decontamination. The text concludes with chapters on incident-specific strategies and terrorist and other criminal activities. The included CD-ROM contains many of the government and noncopyrighted reference materials cited in the text and a photo section of different types of hazardous materials containers.
