Each year in October, around 30,000 eighth- and ninth-graders sit for the SHSAT, an exam which is the sole determinant of admission to 8 of New York City's 9 specialized high schools. These schools, like Stuyvesant and the Bronx HS of Science, offer elite academics and a prestigious step up to college for students lucky enough to earn a spot. But the process is highly competitive, with only 17% of students awarded seats.
