In order to provide Western readers with some background to what is usually called the Islamic doctrine of holy war, Peters (U. of Amsterdam and Netherlands Institute in Cairo) assembles six Islamic texts, translated from the Arabic and Turkish, and three analytical articles on jihad. No date is noted for the first edition; the second adds a final chapter with recent interpretations and applications to justify attacks against the US and American citizens. There is no index.
