In this volume--the first to focus solely on the fort--Durham (US Army Heritage Museum, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania) recounts the history of Fort McAllister in Savannah, Georgia, built to protect the city from attacks from ships. The story, which includes many excerpts from primary sources, is told from its construction in 1861 to its survival from many attacks during the Civil War, and fall to General Sherman.
